can we extend our etheret (vlans) over DS3. what are the steps to do it? Do we need some configurations on cisco devices or it is handled by converters(ethernet to ds3 converter)?

thanks in advance.

Hello Aaron,

either you implement a L2 transport service over IP or MPLS using L2TPv3 or Ethernet over MPLS on Cisco routers or you rely on a WAN provider that will give you an Ethernet over SDH service that may be terminated on ethernet interface both ends.

for L2TPv3 see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3t/12_3t2/feature/guide/gtl2tpv3.html

you will need a pair of cisco 3825 or better to do the job and the appropriate IOS image

with devices supporting MPLS EoMPLS may be a choice but you are likely to need more powerful  boxes (C7200 or better)

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

can you post/indicate a working MPLS EoMPLS configuration example/url ?

Hi

Please refer the below link for configuration

Hello Roberto,

I would suggest per Vlan EoMPLS

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/mpls/configuration/guide/mp_any_transport_ps6441_TSD_Products_Configuration_Guide_Chapter.html#wp1047047

However, depending on your hardware and IOS version there can be many variants specially for C6500/C7600 where having SIP linecards or ES or ES+ linecards can make great difference.

Also on C6500/C7600 in some cases you could use EoMPLS on the SVI ( I have never used it)

One important point is that standard feature requires same vlan-id at both ends, some platforms support vlan-id rewrite see in the same link.

Also EoMPLS  with targeted LDP ( draft Martini) is a point to point service.

On Cisco 12000 you can mix L3 subinterfaces, MPLS core subinterfaces and EoMPLS access subinterfaces on the same port (3GE engine 2 or better).

Hope to help

Giuseppe
