How do I located a node on the network by just the IP? I would like to know which switch it is connected to.

You will need to get its MAC using e.g. an ARP entry and then see which switch has this MAC connected to its host (non-trunk) port.

Thanks.

Hi Sok,

juz issue "show ip arp " it will list with the mac address, then watt u need to issue is "show mac-address-table address ". it will show you on which port it is connected.

assume that the specified ip address is residing some where on the layer 2 switch, if it is on a layer 3 switch, juz keep issuing "show mac-address-table address " it will take to the respecitive layer 2 switch, & there again u type the same command "show mac-address-table address ", it will show you exactly on which port it is connected.

hope this helps.

If you are using Cisco Management tool like CiscoWorks, you can find the switch port which the ip address connected to.

The procedure is as follows:

1> Launch CiscoWorks

2> Campus Manager

3> User Tracking

4> Navigate through IPs to find yours
