Hi all, Can anyone tell me if only certain gbics will work with certain fiber types ie single and multimode, ie can I run lx type transceiver over multimode fiber ?

So, by the looks of it, can you not use Single mode fiber with SX gbic's ?
Can you use multimode fiber with LX gbics ?

In Multimode(MM) ur signal travels in approx 50/62.5 micrometer pipe
In Single mode(SM) ur signal travels in approx 8-10 micrometer pipe.
So if something made for MM will not work with SM fiber. Think of water coming from a 50-60m pipe cannot be connected to 8-10m pipe.
You can connect a SMF to a MMF but you will not get the distance specified for SMF.
You can use use mode conditioning patchchord when u have to connect MMF to SMF but they will introduce loss so u have to see ur distance.
Lower speed go over MMF (F for Fiber)
High speed can go over MMF but for smaller distance.
For higher speed and long distances SMF are preferred.
So SX gbic mostly will be over MMF
LX mostly go over SMF
