there is an interesting article at the link below, which talks about throughput for Gigabit Ethernet. It appears that, taking Ethernet framing and protocol stack overhead into consideration, a thoughtput of 225-240Mbytes (in bits that would be x 8) can be achieved. But in order to get (almost) wire speed, that is, 1000Mbit in each direction, a 2Ghz CPU is necessary...
