GLC-SX-MMD and GLC-TE compatibility with C9500-24Y

we are designing a new solution where a C9500-24Y will be deployed and we need to put GLC-SX-MMD and GLC-TE on it,

so is it compatible?

do we need an extra config for it or does the switch auto-sense the plugged GBIC and forwards traffic properly?

Yes and no.
It will depend entire on what firmware the platform is running now.

the C9500 is a new order, not yet delivered, which is the supported firmware?

It is not just a matter of "supported firmware".

There is a truck-load of IOS-XE bugs which affects optics.

Both optics are supported according to the compatibility matrix. you just need IOS XE 16.9.1 or later.
