Having DHCP server give address to PC on another VLAN

Hello,

I am trying to have a DHCP server, in a different VLAN give addresses to PCs in another VLAN. We have inter-vlan communication on our Layer 3 switch that is our core switch and routing is enabled on the core switch as well. When DHCP is enabled on the server, the PCs settings are changed to DHCP, an address is not aquired.

Does the server have to be in the same vlan as the PCs?

Does a helper address have to added? If so, how is that configured so the right address is configured?

The DHCP server is connected to the Core switch, which then is trunked to the switch where the PCs are connected.

I initially configured an SVI which corresponded to the DHCP pool I created on the core switch. I applied acls that talked to the server in the other vlan, DHCP service was disabled on the server at this time. The PCs did aquire an address from the DHCP Pool created on the core switch and could ping the server that is going to be used to push images to the PCs. We could not get Pixie to communicate with the PC that aquired the address.

Any ideas or thoughts?

For the vlans that are not on the same vlan as the DHCP server -

int vlan <x>
ip helper-address <DHCP server IP address>
