I just recently purchased a working Cisco 3548XL switch from ebay. At the time I didn't have the console cable so it stayed dormant for a few days.
The other day I tried to power it up but heres what happened. Upon trying to power up, all port LEDs and GBIC port leds go amber, system leds go green. After a second or two, port leds all go green, GBIC #1 slot goes amber, GBIC #2 slot goes green and system goes amber. The rest are off.
Also, no console output what-so-ever on 3 different computers using either Putty or hyperterminal.
Now I've been trying to get it to come up long enough for me to get console access to revert the switch to factory defaults but the problem is first off when it boots up and the system led goes amber I cannot do anything.
Can anyone help me with this, I'm not a guru when it comes to Cisco gear (was actually mainly getting this to practice on while I take some CCNA certification courses so I am not aware of all the procedures and such but I am not a beginner when it comes to tech.
First off I need to rule out is that; Is this a DOA switch? Or does this happen on other 3548Xl's, where in it will sometimes fully power up?!
(I noticed the mode button on this thing isn't actually a button but just the face panel which sticks against the mode button).

Hi
Can you get to ROMmon mode? Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMmon
Are your console settigns correct?
9600 baud rate
No parity
8 data bits
1 stop bit
No flow control

Hi Noel!
Thanks for your reply
I can state that all the console-settings are correct, i can verify this because I often configure a 2600-router with the same laptop and program (settings).
When I try to 'Break' in HyperTerm or Teraterm, no response is given. I must add that never any boot/loading-processes were visible in the terminal-session with the 3548XL.
I was wondering if this is a known issue, and any help is much appreciated!!
Sincerly,

It's one of 2 things , its either DOA or someone messed with the config register so that the console port is no longer 9600 baud . You can try different console speed s and see if you get anything.

In a functional switch, the "System" LED is indicative of the status of the appliance. If you get a green LED of the System, then you should get a second green LED from either the Stat, Util, Duplex or Speed.
If your System LED is orange after about 20 seconds then it means that the appliance has gone into ROMmon.
If you power up and the System LED stays on orange then you've got a dead machine.
Sorry mate. Caveat umptor.
