In a recent attempt to improve security somewhat I've started implementing DHCP snooping on my network. The network is a mix of 2960L and X and 9200L's and 9300L's.
However the first thing I notice is that cpu usage skyrockets and in some cases even hits 100% resulting in dropped packets.
Is this expected behaviour or the result of a potential bug?

Why are you posting this question in the "Collaboration" section of the Cisco forum? What does it have to do with Collab?
I've moved your message, to the networking / switching forum?
