Oh, if it helps any, with a stack you create a virtual chassis with redundant power and supervisors (also the stack cables may provide more bandwidth then the ordinary ports, and function somewhat like a chassis bus).
What's not redundant is the edge ports, think of them as like chassis line cards.

Usually, yes, even when switch platform supports both stacking and a FHRP.
If switch platform supports stacking but not a FHRP, normally you would use the stacking or have no gateway redundancy unless you used a pair of routers connected to a single switch, or switch stack, but the L3 switch running just in L2 mode. The latter may raise the question of why do it. Short answer, cost vs. benefit, especially when, at the time, WANs connections were not Ethernet.
