i have an old cisco catalyst 3500 xl Switch.

I want to manage this switch from my network x.x.7.0/24. That is why i created an interface vlan7 with the ip x.x.7.251/ 255.255.255.0. But this interface is shown as shutdown. I couldn't enable it by doing "no shutdown". so, i removed this interface and tried to rename/remove interface vlan1 to interface vlan7 but it didn't work. How do i do this ? how can i edit this interface vlan1 to interface vlan7 or how do i enable a second interface vlan ?

I have disabled the interface vlan1 with "shutdown" and  created a new interface vlan 70. It did the job.

I am guessing there no interface active in VLAN 7 so the VLAN 7 SVI come up (it always show down)

try this :

configure any port switch mode access vlan 7

connect any device, so you can see VLAN 7 SVI come up.

Hope this help you, if not working post the information below :

show run

show ip interface brief

show vlan

The switch is a 2900XL/3500XL and this means the VLAN database needs be created FIRST before creating the VLAN.

XL in 3500 xl Switch means special model of special switch which is unique type of switch which I don't think has been repeated by Cisco. Therefore, be careful using this switch for CCNA studying.  I recommend using Packet trace for CCNA labbing and exam cert
