Hyperterminal connection problem!

Dear professionals,

I have a SGE2000 switch. I am using a laptop so I could not go through configuration with Serial-Serial ports and I had to buy a Serial-USB port. But the console port of the switch is male as well as the port I bought. So I bought a two end female serial converter so I would be able to connect the switch to my computer. I am using a x64 Windows 7 and copied Win XP's hyperterminal files into the right place so I can configure my switch with Hyperterminal.

But, when I connect it, nothing appears on hyperterminal's screen! Hyperterminal connects because the timer works down there. COM number is selected correctly. Also the options for COM (After I select the right one) are set correctly in Hyperterminal. But like I said NOTHING loads from the switch. I even tested it with puTTy and another laptop.

I reseted the switch physicaly and nothing happened. Pleaaassssee somebody help me to connect this device to my laptop so I can configure it.

Thanks guys.

Hi,

Can you try these setting on your Hyperterminal and test again?

  • Bits per second: 115200
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None

Also, if you did the above setting and did not work try com2, 3, 4

  • Thanks Reza, but it did not work! I was researching about this problem the entire day.. I've been out of dozen of dollars to buy cables and stuff. I would appreciate more comments about this. Thanks guys

Any othe ideas? I am waiting here.......

If you know your cable is good for sure, leave the console cable connected to the switch then reboot it and see if you see the switch loading.

Some times the reboot helps, but obviously there will be user downtime.

I tried that before. But no reaction.

Is it wrong that I am using such cable? As I explained before the console port is a male port and the cable that I have is USB-Serial (male), so I had to buy a female-female port converter so I can connect the switch to my laptop. Is there anything wrong with this? I searched all over Micro Center and could not find a USB-Serial (female) port.

    Please somebody give me clue....

when you bought the switch there is blue console cable that comes in the box. Do you have that cable?

I did not buy it. The company did which I don't think they have it available. Do you know the model of the cable? It should not be something odd though! The console port is Serial and I think any serial port should work on it!

When you purchase a Cisco router or switch, the box come with a blue console cable.  One side of the cable is RJ45 that connect to the router or switch and the other side is female DB9.  Now, in you case, since you can not connect the RJ45 to your device, because your device is male serial, then you need an adapter that converts from RJ45 to female serial.  As for the other side since it is already female you can connect that to you laptop.   if your laptop does not have a serial port, then you need to get a short cable that convert serial male to USB so you can connect it to your PC

here is a picture of the blue cable I just explained
