mac address-table aging-time on Nexus and IOS

Hi,

We have two Nexus 7000 switches in the core and a number of Nexus 5000 and Catalysts connected to them.

I noticed that the default "mac address-table aging-time" on the 7000s is 1800 seconds, while the default value on 5000s and Catalyst switches is 300 seconds.

Is there a good reason why the value is much larger on the 7000s or should we change the setting on them to 300 seconds?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Harry

Hi Harry,

Thats correct the default mac-aging timer on Nexus is changed to 1800 sec if you notice the ARP aging timer is changed to 1500 secs. One of the main reason for this change is to avold unicast flooding in the network due to assymetric routing.

Since Nexus 5000 are l2 switches only the mac-aging timer is unchanged.

I would suggest to leave the timers default unless there is a need to change.
