before you decide to upgrade answer two questions:

1-is there a vulnerability or bug that you need to patch?

2-is there a feature you need that is available in a newer version?

if both answer no, then dont bother upgrading. all versions are available through download section on cisco.com and all have extensiove descriptions of the dtails of each feature set.

No one can answer this question because no one knows your network any better than you.
So my recommendation is to pick a version that you fancy and carefully read the Release Notes. Only then do you make that decision as to what version you can upgrade to.

In addition to what the other posters have noted, you also need to take into account all the hardware in your existing 6509 chassis. Sometimes newer IOS versions completely drop support for EoL hardware. I.e. if you upgrade to a new IOS version, it's possible some of your hardware will not longer function.

That said, if there's later releases in the same IOS version chain they shouldn't have any hardware issues. I's often worth checking release notes for fixes, especially security related.
