IBM Blade switches not accepting an IP address

When I give the FA0 this command:

!

interface FastEthernet0

ip address 172.24.0.240 255.255.255.192

no ip route-cache

!

I get a response that because it is not part of a stack or has IP routing turned on, it will not let me reconfigure the IP address of the interface. How am I supposed to configure an IP address on an interface if I do not turn on IP routing? Never seen this issue on any other model of switch, not sure if it is a blade architecture thing or not. Thanks for the insight.

Matt,

Is this 3110 switch? If yes, it is a layer-2 switch by default.  If you want to assign a management IP address, you need to configure an SVI interface.

inter vlan xx

ip address xx.xx.xx.xx
