ie2000 with 170W power supply only supplying 65W to PoE

An IE-2000-16PTC-G-L, which has 4 x PoE+ ports, with a 170W power supply, should have 120W available to the PoE ports. However, it is only making 65W available.

 

Is it supposed to detect the available power, or is there a way to set the available power in the configuration?

Could you please provide the output of the following commands?

show power inline
show controller power
show lldp
show version

According to the IE 2000 hardware installation guide,the models that support PoE provide up to four ports of either PoE (15.4 W per port; IEEE 802.3af) or PoE+ (30 W per port; IEEE 802.3at), depending on the power source used.

 

Let's validate this with the outputs of the previously requested commands.

From the show power inline output, note that Available is only 65W. This is the problem. There should be at least 120W given it's a 170W power supply. We set the power on each port statically to get the ports up, but the devices really need 23W, but that is just temporary. Ideally, just want the default 30W per port, but if we do that, it can only start two devices

Thanks for responding. I can't try the raw version right now, as I'm not on site, but I have the following from a saved show tech.

 

Could I just use the global (as opposed to interface) command "power inline 120000" command to set the total available power for all PoE+ interfaces? This seems logical, and as the power is external, this seems the only way to tell the switch how much power should be available.

 

The data sheet for the switch says a 65W power supply supports up to two PoE+ ports, and a 170W power supply supports "maximum" PoE+ ports. Do you think by maximum they mean all PoE ports? It's like the documentation writer didn't know either.

I'm suspecting that the issue is more related to how the Power Supply is connected to the IE-2000.

 

  • What's the part number of the power supply that you're using?
  • How is the power supply connected to the switch?

Be aware of the following:

 

The IE 2000 switch models with PoE capability (IE-2000-16PTC-G-E, IE-2000-16PTC-G-L, and IE-2000-16PTC-G-NX) are equipped with an additional DC input terminal block. This DC terminal block allows the connection of a second power supply (see Power over Ethernet Ports), or a second input from site source DC power to operate the PoE ports. The PoE terminal block accepts 48 VDC or 54 VDC at 2.5 A.

 

The 170W (both AC and DC) power supplies have enough power for the base unit and the PoE. Connect one power output from the 170W PSU to the main power input of the IE2000, and the other power output of the 170W PSU to the PoE power input of the IE2000.

 

Regarding the 65W power supplies, those supports up to 4 ports PoE or 2 ports PoE+ when used in PoE power input in an AC or high DC environment.

 

The other thing would be to test (using a tester) that the power supply is in fact providing the expected power output.

Thanks again for replying, I appreciate your help. As you can see, the connection is as documented. The measurement shouldn't be necessary - the situation is the same for nine switches.

We've opened a TAC case, so we'll see what they say.

What was the answer from the Cisco TAC?

Just figured it out. Needed to config max WATTs for the new Power supply:

Hi everyone,

I have the same issue than Stephen, and "power inline wattage max 130" seems to solve the problem, since now appear 130W available, but is important to mention than on the PoE input Power say: 54VDC / 1.3A, what is 70W, aprox. the 65W available that appear by default.

So the question is, Is this switch capable of power up 4 ports x30W or just 65-70W?

I don´t want to burn anything trying this.
