Hi,

Recently on two switches, both being same cisco WS-C3750E-24PD, running with same IOS c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin

got noticed that the license state of one switch is showing incorrectly as shown below

Swithc 1)

     Switch#sh license

     Index 1 Feature: advipservices

             Period left: Life time

             License Type: Permanent

             License State: Active, In Use

             License Priority: Medium

             License Count: Non-Counted

     Index 2 Feature: ipservices

Period left: 8  weeks 4  days

             License Type: Evaluation

License State: Active, Not in Use, EULA not accepted

             License Priority: None

             License Count: Non-Counted

     Index 3 Feature: ipbase

Period left: 0  minute  0  second

     Switch#sh ver

Cisco IOS Software, C3750E Software (C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(58)SE2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

     License Level: ipservices

     License Type: Permanent

     Next reload license Level: ipservices

Question: Though, show license says advipservices is Permanent license and is In Active, why does show license shows level as ipservices as permanent ?? Any thoughts please?

Below is the same thing on another switch being same model and having same ios version and its showing correctly....

Switch 2)

     Switch#sh license

     Index 1 Feature: advipservices

Period left: 0  minute  0  second

     Index 2 Feature: ipservices

Period left: 8  weeks 4  days

             License Type: Evaluation

License State: Active, Not in Use, EULA not accepted

             License Priority: None

             License Count: Non-Counted

     Index 3 Feature: ipbase

             Period left: Life time

             License Type: Permanent

             License State: Active, In Use

             License Priority: Medium

             License Count: Non-Counted

     Switch#sh ver

Cisco IOS Software, C3750E Software (C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(58)SE2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

     License Level: ipbase

     License Type: Permanent

     Next reload license Level: ipbase

I will not be able to execute any changes/modifications on switch as of now, and would just need possible thought to identify how this is happening..

Thanks,

Manjunath

Hi Manjunath,

Can you make sure to apply this command to the second switch, save and reboot?

config t

license boot level ipservices

HTH

Hi Reza,

I believe you meant to execute command "license boot level advipservices" .....advipservices not ipservices..becaues show license says advipservices as permanent.

I believe the command was applied already but got noticed today, but let me reapply it on scheduling a downtime window.

Would there be no other reason you believe ??

Also would like to inform something additional here, a strange thing

under show version and show boot on both switches i see this,

On Switch 1)

     Switch#show version

     [truncated]

System image file is "9 "

     [truncated]

     Switch#

     Switch#sh boot

     BOOT path-list      : flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin

     Config file         : flash:/config.text

     Private Config file : flash:/private-config.text

Switch was rebooted and it wasn't stuck in ROMMON, switch came up and alive but still show version says system image file is "9 " ........ wonder why

on Switch 2)

      Switch#show version

      [truncated]

      System image file is "flash:/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin"

      [truncated]

      Switch#

     Switch#sh boot

     BOOT path-list      : flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin

     Config file         : flash:/config.text

     Private Config file : flash:/private-config.text

Any thoughts again please.....

Thanks,

Manjunath

Hi Manjunath,

system image file is "9 " ........ wonder why

This appears to be an issue IOS file being corrupted.  Here is what I would do.  Have an outage window, delete the IOS completely , format the flash card, reload a fresh ver of IOS than reboot.

Question: are these switches stacked? Are you supposed to have permanant "advipservices" license on both switches? I know licensing is a pain, and I had my share of issues with it.

Anyway, if the command above I provided doesn't work, you are going to need a new license key.  When you apply to get a license key, make sure the UID of the switch is exactly what is shows in the sh ver, if not the license does not work.

Hi Reza,

I just verified the IOS md5 signature value, it matches with cisco provided md5 value (c9dcf62d0f86e11d24550925a59fb860).

So, can the IOS still be corrupted ?

Question: are these switches stacked? Are you supposed to have permanant "advipservices" license on both switches?

NO, its a standalone switch, nothing stacked to it yet...

Thanks,

Manjunath

Hi Manjunath,

Since it passed the MD5 test, than IOS is probably good.  I think, some one has accidentally renamed the IOS name on the flash to "9 ". So, you can try renaming it back or load a new one. As for the license, try the boot command and let me know.  Are these switches stacked?

Reza

Hi Reza,

NO., both are standalone switches at different floor.

Flash is having proper image name, the image name in flash is "c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin".

Did no boot system and configured boot system again, and rebooted., still show version shows system image file is "9 "

Crazy IOS isn't it

Crazy IOS isn't it

It is.

I would delete the existing one, download a fresh one from Cisco's site and load it.  Who knows what is going on with the IOS.

Reza

If you do a show flash: do you see the proper image file? Have they implemented secure boot-image on these switches yet?

Kevin Dorrell

Hi Kevin,

yes, show flash: and show boot points proper image file and secure boot-image is not implemented

Any thoughts again please?

Thanks,

Manjunath
