intermittent poor network response to one connected server (voice recorder) on 3750 switch stack

mitchen
Level 2
Level 2

We have recently set up VoIP (using Mitel phone system) in one of our offices.  Auto QoS enabled and Voice (VLAN55) and Data VLAN (VLAN50) set-up.    We have 5 x Cisco 3750 switches in a stack.

The problem we have is that a connection to one server on the LAN – which carries out the voice recording ( a Red Box Recorder, for what its worth) – seems to suffer from some intermittent high response times/packet loss on the LAN.   This in turn affects the quality of the voice recordings at those times i.e. when you listen to recordings at those times there is some “jitter”.   (This server actually sits in the Voice VLAN)

Now, the fingers are being pointed at this being a “network problem” but there is no sign of any congestion or anything – we monitor utilisation and its relatively low.  And there are no problems with any other servers.  We have tried new network cards, new cables, new switch port, etc but the problem persists.  We monitor response times to the server and you will see normal response times then for periods it will shoot up to 600-700ms+ for small periods of time – we haven’t yet been able to correlate these high response times with any other activity.   There are no such problems for other servers.  (The other strange thing is that ping responses during such periods will typically form a pattern in one good response, one bad response, one good response, one bad response e.g. from another device on the same LAN:

Even pings direct from the network switch itself show the occasional very high response e.g.

Success rate is 100 percent (10000/10000), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/3/772 ms

Here is the interface config for the switchport connected to the affected server:

!

interface FastEthernet1/0/5

switchport access vlan 55

switchport mode access

switchport voice vlan 55

srr-queue bandwidth share 10 10 60 20

priority-queue out

mls qos trust cos

auto qos voip trust

spanning-tree portfast

end

!

Interface statistics don’t show any signs of errors or collisions or high utilisation etc:

FastEthernet1/0/5 is up, line protocol is up (connected)

Hardware is Fast Ethernet, address is b4a4.e3f4.ec85 (bia b4a4.e3f4.ec85)

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,

  5 minute input rate 123000 bits/sec, 2 packets/sec

  5 minute output rate 2195000 bits/sec, 1202 packets/sec

16584393 packets input, 21459676351 bytes, 0 no buffer

     Received 110362 broadcasts (30992 multicasts)

     0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

     0 watchdog, 30992 multicast, 0 pause input

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

     182894914 packets output, 38210765321 bytes, 0 underruns

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output

The only thing I can think of that could have any effect might be QoS settings?  We have just used AutoQoS config.  I’m not entirely sure how to interpret these stats but here are the stats for the interface in question (no sign of dropped packets at least?)

The only other issue we’ve had is that some phones intermittently “dropped” off the network – see https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3238594#3238594 - we never really got to the bottom of that to be honest and, since it happens rarely, its being “lived with” – as part of troubleshooting that, on advice of our VoIP providers, we disabled CDP and enabled LLDP.  I don’t know whether that could have any impact or not?

The only other interesting factor is that the server in question is actually a virtual server (hyper-v) – again, I don’t know if there is any significane in that or not (our server guys assure us the set-up is fine!)

As you can probably gather, I’m struggling on this one!  Can anyone advise on what the possible cause could be or what more I can do to troubleshoot further and pinpoint the cause?   Its getting a bit “political” as we have 3rd parties that look after the voice side of things and they are pointing the finger at the “network” being at fault!

Thanks.

Hi Mitchen,

Please session into the stack master and capture 'show platform port-asic stats drop' output. This should tell you if there are any drops because of QoS. If you do not see any drops, please capture 'show platform pm if-numbers' and share the outputs.

Shashank

Hi,

I only see dscp 0 traffic incoming and outgoing on interface fa1/0/5. This means that this interface has all the traffic with same marking. If there is some traffic (voice)  which needs to be prioritized, it should have been classified and marked properly and should have been seen on dscp 46 counters.

If this port connects to a device sending voice traffic, can you check if the traffic is being marked as dscp 46 by the server?

Regards,

Shashank

Hi,  thanks for the response.   Outputs from those commands are below...

Thanks again for your assistance - very much appreciated.

Hi,

as i understand it, this server (its a Red Box Voice Recorder, I don't know if that helps any!) simply takes an RTP stream from the Mitel phone system to record the voice calls so I don't think it should be marked as DSCP 46 so I think what we see is correct?  However, that side of things was all set-up by a 3rd party and the information from them was very sketchy (or to be more precise, non-existent!)

Hi,

With the outputs it is clear that this switch is not dropping the packets (even though all the traffic on fa1/0/5 is dscp 0), either because of QoS or congestion. If there are other switches involved, we may probably have to check them too and we may also need to check the server.

We can perform a sniffer capture for fa1/0/5 to investigate deeper if we are facing TCP retransmissions for this traffic. I would suggest to open a TAC case for in-depth troubleshooting.

Regards,

Shashank

Hi Shashank,

thanks for your assistance on this.

I will request some more investigation on the server itself (I'm suspicious of the virtual server set-up) but will open a TAC case if neccessary.
