I'm in the process of upgrading all of our 3850 switches from 03.06.08E to 16.03.09, so far everything are going smooth.
I noticed in one of our 3850 the current image is 03.03.03SE(License Level: Ipservices), Can I upgrade it also to 16.03.09 directly? (There is an "S" in the current image.)
In the cisco website I only found this document. "Upgrading from Cisco IOS XE 3.xE to Cisco IOS XE Denali 16.1.x, 16.2.x, or 16.3.x in Install Mode". I cannot find any document stating that I can upgrade from 3.XSE to 16.3.X
Thank you.

You can upgrade direct from 3.X.X to 16.X.X, however, there will be a mandatory microcode upgrade.
IMPORTANT: Do not forget to check if you need to apply SMU patches.

I decided to proceed with the upgrade and it all went good.

I will research in cisco website for "SMU patches". I don't have idea about it.

Looks like SMU is not applicable to 16.3.X.
