Hi al there,
my task is to upgrade a couple of 6500 series switches, 6513 with SUP720/MSFC3 (WS-SUP720) and Policy Feature Card 3 (WS-F6K-PFC3B) installed. Could someone give me an "easy-to-understand" howto, how to upgrade those switches if in SSO redundancy mode with two SUPs installed?
I understand that it is goog to connect to the MSFC3 via console and upgrade this first, is this correct?
I also have to upgrade some 6509 but I only can test it on one 6509-E so therefore it would be helpful to me if somebody can post a short step-by-step list in how to get everything up to date. Here are the modules installed on those switches:
SFM-capable 48 port 10/100/1000mb RJ45 WS-X6548-GE-TX
Supervisor Engine 720 (Active) WS-SUP720-3B
CEF720 4 port 10-Gigabit Ethernet WS-X6704-10GE
CEF720 48 port 10/100/1000mb Ethernet WS-X6748-GE-TX
SFM-capable 16 port 1000mb GBIC WS-X6516A-GBIC
Policy Feature Card 3 WS-F6K-PFC3B
MSFC3 Daughterboard WS-SUP720
Centralized Forwarding Card WS-F6700-CFC
WiSM WLAN Service Module WS-SVC-WISM-1-K9
SFM-capable 16 port 1000mb GBIC WS-X6516A-GBIC
Centralized Forwarding Card WS-SVC-WISM-1-K9-D
Any helpful information is strongly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Michael

Hi Michael,
IOS upgrade is not a big deal as you only need to upgrade the Supervisors engine (use the procedure on the link below). After reload all the modules in the chassis will have the correct IOS image which will be pushed by the active supervisor.
The only thing you need to make sure of is whether all the Line Cards support the new IOS release you are going to upgrad your system to. If you do an upgrade between 2 release within the same train, there is no problem for usre (ie. from SXH3 to SXH6). If you are jumping from a train to another you'd better check the release note for the new image and confirm that all the installed hardware is supported.
Upgrade procedure for redundant sup720 engines in SSO can be found here:
Release note with the list of supported hardware for 12.2SX (it goes into train details within the doc) is here:

regards,
Riccardo
