ip sla operations 's purposes

Hi everybody

I am reading about different ip sla operations . For example, icmp operation will give us information about jitter, round trip delay, or whether the remote node is reachable or not. But there are other operations such as RTP, TCP connection, udp etc.

1)What kind of valuable information we can get using rtp operation between R1----link---------R2 ?

2 )What kind of valuable information we can get using UDP operation between R1----link--- R2?

3)What kind of valuable information we can get using TCP connection between R1--link----R2 ?

Thanks and have a great weekend.

Hi Sarah,

Here are a couple of examples from the config guide regarding UDP and TCP SLAs operation:

UDP Echo Operation

The UDP echo operation measures end-to-end response time between a  Cisco router and devices using IP. UDP is a transport layer (Layer 4)  Internet protocol that is used for many IP services. UDP echo is used to  measure response times and test end-to-end connectivity.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios-xml/ios/ipsla/configuration/12-4t/Configuring_IP_SLAs_UDP_Echo_Operations.html

TCP Connect Operation

The IP SLAs TCP Connect operation measures the response time taken to  perform a TCP Connect operation between a Cisco router and devices using  IP. TCP is a transport layer (Layer 4) Internet protocol that provides  reliable full-duplex data transmission. The destination device can be  any device using IP or an IP SLAs Responder.

Hello Sarah,

I have been using IP SLAs RTP-Based in  my network for gathering statistics that measure's   delay, jitter, packet loss , and also estimate's  the MOS for the link, having such statistics will really help you with the  monitoring and troubleshooting your voip traffic that is running on the your network.

Please find below an example of the output for the IP SLA that I use for the Jitter

Round Trip Time (RTT) for       Index 7

        Latest RTT: 180 milliseconds

Latest operation start time: *22:12:37.182 UTC

Latest operation return code: OK

RTT Values:

Number Of RTT: 1000             RTT Min/Avg/Max: 178/180/188 millisecond

s

Latency one-way time:

Number of Latency one-way Samples: 0

Source to Destination Latency one way Min/Avg/Max: 0/0/0 milliseconds

Destination to Source Latency one way Min/Avg/Max: 0/0/0 milliseconds

Jitter Time:

Number of SD Jitter Samples: 999

Number of DS Jitter Samples: 999

Source to Destination Jitter Min/Avg/Max: 0/1/2 milliseconds

Destination to Source Jitter Min/Avg/Max: 0/2/7 milliseconds

Packet Loss Values:

Loss Source to Destination: 0           Loss Destination to Source: 0

Out Of Sequence: 0      Tail Drop: 0

Packet Late Arrival: 0  Packet Skipped: 0

Voice Score Values:

Calculated Planning Impairment Factor (ICPIF): 13

MOS score: 4.00

Also please refer to the following link for more information about the benifits of IP SLA for the RTP
