ISR 4221 Password Recovery

Vortex600
Level 1
Level 1

Hello,

We have Cisco ISR 4221 that has a login local account setup to login to the router that was setup by a previous engineer that is no longer with the company so we are not able to login. I can not confirm the confreg. One of the steps says to "Set the confreg to not auto boot (0x0 if your baud rate is 9600), and then reload the box. The router enters the ROM monitor, indicated by the ROM monitor prompt (rommon1>).  How is this set without access to the router? I

Thanks in advance!!!

From ROMMON,
1. confreg 0x2142
2. Reboot the router
3. Change the password
4. config-registry 0x2102
5. save the config
6. reboot the router

I teach networking & it seems like one of our past students did this to fix a missing password issue, but didn't change the registry back when they built the config again. Both are locked behind unknow user names & passwords. Whats the work around?

What is the model of the router?

The 4221

Console into the router and reboot.

Post the entire bootup process.

The router is configured for SDWAN.

Force the router to go into ROMMON and post the complete output to the command "set".

Sorry for the delay, my class pivoted to written material & packet tracers so I had to find time to wheel out the rack.

edit to include that I believe this is a different router than from above, but it is doing the same thing. I have run into different posts saying that the 4221 kept reverting to SD-WAN mode. In previous years the routers were hardly ever shut down, but this year my room is split between networking & PC repair so I have to wheel the network racks in & out so they get shut down a lot. Power cycling might be part of the prob.

And which one am I troubleshooting?

If this is a different router from the one that is booting in SD-WAN, post the entire bootup process and tell us what the problem is.

Leo,

Thanks for the help! I finally got my academies access the management program squared away so I could get ahold of a new image. I think someone before me didn't have proper access so was throwing whatever they could find onto it. Or, a mischievous or malicious student last year who thought they'd be really hilarious & nuke the routers.
