Hi,
We have purchased new Cisco WS-C4500X-32 switch. Two number of ports i.e. Tengig1/16 and Tengig1/28 are not coming up. In show tech-support the status of these two ports is showing as
Te1/16 RunModeOperating State=EmptyHole Changed=False
Te1/28 RunModeOperating State=EmptyHole Changed=False
I am not able to understand the meaning of State=EmptyHole.
Also, I would like to know if this is a hardware or software issue?
I have attached show tech-support for reference.
Regards,
Shahab Khan

Shabab,
Try reseating the gbics and see if it helps else go ahed and replace the gbics.

This is a hardware problem most likely.
As suggested reseat the GBIC and if that doesn't fix it swap with known good from another slot.
It it persists, it may be the 4500X hardware that is faulty. I doubt that thought since your show tech indicates that POST (power on self test) passed fine.

Hi,
I'm not sure what the problem is, but I don't believe it's hardware. Not unless Cisco are sending out large numbers of defective Catalyst 4500X.
I have two 16-port Catalyst 4500X (WS-C4500X-16) running IOS-XE version 03.03.02 and both chassis are displaying the same State=EmptyHole issue on two of their 16-ports. In both of my switches I see the EmptyHole on the same ports, those being Te1/10 and Te1/12. In my mind this is too much of a coincidence and so rules out hardware.
In my case though the EmptyHole status perhaps make sense in that I don't have transceivers plugged into Te1/10 or Te1/12 i.e., an "empty hole".
The odd thing with Shahab's problem is that he's seeing this state on two of his switch ports (which don't have transceivers plugged into the port so nothing to reseat) yet the show interface status indicates he doesn't have transceivers plugged into any ports in the range Te1/7 - 32.
I'll try moving the tranceivers around in my switch to see if the EmptyHole moves to the ports that are actually empty.
Regards
