L2 Switch Command Clarification

avilt
Level 3
Level 3

We have a L2 switch C2950 in production. Please check the attached file for "Show version" output. On all the LAN ports the command "no IP address" is configures as show below.

interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport access vlan 30
switchport mode access
no ip address
duplex full
speed 100
spanning-tree portfast
spanning-tree guard root

If it's a L2 switch why does it allow to configure this command. I am preparing a cold standby for this production switch which is also C2950 but with different IOS (12.1(6)EA2a) and there I could not enter this command at the interface level.

Appreciate your reply.

Those are probably the oldest IOS versions I have seen on a 2950 and venture to guess that  was eliminated in later releases. You cannot add a ip address on a port on a 2950 .  You can only have a ip address on a single SVI which is used to manage the switch remotely . Cisco had a habit of leaving in commands that would not even work on a given switch .
