Layer 3 core or Layer 2 core

Hello All,

I am preparing my CCNP swtiching exam. I am confuse about layer 3 core or layer 2 core. What I mean is that what are the factors in a real world scenario that helps us decide if we should have a layer 3 core of layer 2 core and what are the best practices. Any help or link to some documents would be higly appriciated.
