hello, im starting on the path to become ccna certified. i bought todd lammle's book a while back and just recently purchaced 2 2600 routers, 2 2950 switches, and a 1700 series router im guessing for frame relay. i need help with the physical set-up of some different topologies to get me started. the connections on the 2600 routers, 1 e 0/0, 1 s0/0. on the 1700 router there are 2 t1 csu/dsu. i have one cat5 cross and 3 regular and the dte and dce between routers.
if you could give a clueless beginer some advice i would be greatful. i have hooked up the one router with the rolled cable and db9 to usb converter and started setting up passwords and all that jazz. next i want to hook up the cat5 to the pc also so i would have the rolledover and cat5 hooked up. would this ping back and forth? i guess i have to set up an ip adress on the router but could it be any ip address or......... another thing is do i have to be hooked up to the internet for certain topologies.
any suggestions and direction would be helpful and we can discuss this further if anyone answer my plea for help. i cant find any real life set-up example on-line or youtube anywhere.
and i am desperate to learn this stuff
thanks

Hi,
I would start by connecting a PC to one of the 2950 switches. Then connect the switch to one of the routers.
PC------------2950--------------2600
all using just cat5 straight through cables.
Make sure the physical connectivity is good by checking the link lights on the switch and the router. If you are not getting link light login to the switch and the router and under the corresponding interfaces issue this command
no sh
If still no link light, make sure the cables are good. Once you get to this point, now you are ready to login to the switch and router and start configuring them.

thank right now i currently hooked up both routers with the serial wic connections and did a no shut and the line protocal was down. i forgot to put the clock rate on the dce. now the serial0/0 is up and the line protocal is up but i cant ping, one another and i cant connect through telnet. i think i screwed up the ip addresses i just put in 172.168.1.1 255.255.255.240 for one and 192.168.1.1 for the other. is this the problem? if you could give an example of the correct ip address between the two routers and an example to ping the two that would be great.
i did a (sh ip route) and it said the gateway of the last resort is not set
172.168.0.0 is subneted, 1 subnet
172.168.1.0 is directly connected, serial0/0
any clue what that means?
