Multiple vlan's on a 2924

Hello,

I have a cisco 2924XL Catalyst switch.

I want to make tree vlan's with different subnet's.(192.168.1.254/24:192.168.2.254/24:192.168.3.254/24)

I made the vlan database and the vlan interface and i put the vlan's on interfaces 0/1 0/2 0/3

Now here is my problem.

For some reason i can get only one vlan interface in up state a the time.

The other two are stay in shutdown state.

The 2924 switch is a L2 switch only. What this means is that it will not route between vlans. In addition you can only have one L3 vlan interface up/up at any one time and this vlan interface is used to manage the switch not to act as a default-gateway for clients in that vlan.

To route between vlans you need either

1) to get a L3 switch ie. 3560/3750/4500/6500

OR

2) use routing on a stick where you connect your 2924 switch to a router with a trunk port and then you have subinterfaces on the router for each vlan.

The 2900XL/3500XL and 2940/2950 series switches support only ONE VLAN active.

I just bought a 3550 i go and play with that one.

It shouldn't make any difference.  You don't need to create an VLAN interface unless you want to remotely manage a switch.  What is most important is to create a VLAN instance.
