native vlan

Hi all, I dont know if anyone can help me on here, I know with cisco we use the native vlan, which is untagged on trunk ports, I have had to use some nortel switches too, my question is I see on the nortel there is the term default vlan, If I dont set this to the same as what vlan I put the device in it does not work, any ideas what default vlan does in this cause, I thought it was the same as native?

As far as I know, Nortel's default VLAN is the same as Native VLAN.

Are you trying to link up the Nortel and Cisco switches? If so, in my experience, you have to make sure that your Nortel switch supports "Cisco's BPDU format". In the past, I have set up a network with a Nortel Alteon load balancer trunked with Cisco Catalyst without any problem. The Alteon can even participate with Cisco's PVST spanning tree topology.
