Need help bootvar with new IOS name on 6506

Level 1

    Hi everybody,

I upgraded the IOS on 6506E, SUP 720-10GE, non-redundant, to a new one, rebooted OK. Switch seems to work fine but "show bootvar" shows the previous IOS name instead of the new one: s72033-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ3.bin

Removed the old IOS name on "boot var", gave it new IOS name, "show bootvar" now has correct new IOS name, write mem again and reloaded  switch.

It booted up OK but "show bootvar" still has the old IOS:  "s72033-ipbasek9-mz.122-33.SXI2a.bin"

According to IOS upgrade procedure, after all the upgrade IOS steps done, then just "write mem" then the "bootvar: will have the new IOS name, but on my switch it is always has the old IOS name ??

How can I set the bootvar to new IOS name?

Please, help.

Thanks

Hi,

Did you get any chance to verify the bootvarible on the SP process, please check the below command,

#remote command switch show bootvar - This will share the bootvar from SP

Its looks like this issue matching with the known bug, please see the detail below,

CSCsv03353 - "Show boot" display old boot string value after reset intermittently

Symptom: "show bootvar" may show an old boot statement after reload on a Cisco Catalyst 6500.

Conditions: This is seen intermittently

Workaround: After upgrading the image on IOS systems, reload and Boot IOS/ION image to make upgrade Succesful.
During next reload from RP rommon clean the hybrid nvram area

rommon 1 > priv
You now have access to the full set of monitor commands.
Warning: some commands will allow you to destroy your
configuration and/or system images and could render
the machine unbootable.
rommon 2 > nvram_erase
Enter in hex the start address [0xbe020000]: 0xbe020000
Enter in hex the test size or length in bytes [0x200]: 10000
rommon 3 >

For Earlier versions including 12.2(17r)SX5 , follow steps rommon 1 & 2 and shouldn't modify config-register value from cli after cleaning nvram. if the value is modified from cli above procedure needs to be repeated.

Further information: This problem is cosmetic. "show bootvar" returns the boot variable for the routing processor while it is the one on the switching processor that determines the image to boot.

Aru

Thanks for all your help.

Problem was corrected by running command:  confreg 0x2102.  Re-start switch, the bootvar shows new IOS name.
