Hi,

The 2248's are designed to be a fabric extension to the 5596 parent switch. This means that you can take advanatage of the high end Nexus operating system features such as vPC and in-service upgrades. These are imporant features for data centres. They are typically deployed as top of rack switches for server farms.

The disadvantage of the 2248's are is if the 5596 fails then the 2248 also fails.

The 3750X are not an extension of the 5596, rather they are a stand-alone switch. Therefore they can't leverage the Nexus feature set.

The advantage of the 3750 are

- If the 5596 fails then the 3750 will continue to operate.

- It also supports Layer 3 out of the box. To support Layer 3 on the 5596 and the 2248 you need the Layer 3 daughter board installed.
