New core switch

Hello,

I am lookin for opinions on a new core switch.  We currently have multiple 3560G's that we are using with our ESX hosts and our dark fiber interconnects between our buildings.  These switches are being over worked, and are showing a lot of output drops.  I have done hours of research and configuring with QOS and have decided that its time to replace them.

I am currently looking at a 4507R+E switch with dual SUP7L-E's and a pair of WS-X4648-RJ45V+E line cards along with one or two WS-X4612-SFP-E cards for fiber connections.

We have about 24 vlan's that we are routing on the 3560G's and also have redundant interconnects on our fiber network, so layer 3 is a must have.  Otherwise nothing else fancy, some acl's, ip sla's, hsrp (which would be removed if we are going to a chassis switch), and some etherchannel's.

The cost of this 4507R+E is at our max budget, so at this point I don't see much else as an option.  I did originally look at 3750X switches, but the buffers on those have the same problem as the 3560G's, so I have ruled them out.  We do have some older 4948-10G switches that we use for ISCSI traffic, and they have never had any buffering issues, so it seems that the 4507 should have no problem with the traffic.

Any recommendations welcome.

Thanks,

Dan.

Hi Dan,

Good choice though as you are constainst on the budget.

stack of more than three 3750 in a stack, it's cheaper just to get a 4510R+E with Sup7 card.  This setup is also better.

Else the bestoption would had been with the Cat 6500 with redundant sup.

Depending on what the size of the network is, Cisco is recommending that your core 6500 use the

Sup2T, distro using the Sup720 and access using the Sup32

If your network is not that large then using the Sup720 in your core and distro is also a good way of doing things.

For more details, I would suggest going through the datasheet of both these switches.
