Staff usually uses db9 to rj45 to connect to console port for initial setup. We are thinking about getting new laptops but none come with serial ports. What are people using? I've seen some USB to db9s. will this work?

Yeah, they work OK - I've seen one that was a bit hit 'n' miss, often needed a reboot to keep it working.. others work fine but are cumbersome.
You're really better off with a good old fashioned serial port though - no messing around with extra bits of kit, just plug in and go.

I use a KeySpan (P/N USA-19) USB-DB9 serial adaptor with an IBM ThinkPad, works like a charm. It was the first (and only) one I tried.

I've had no problems with usb but make sure whichever one you buy is able to send the 'break' sequence as I hear some don't.

The belkin F5U409 works great as configuration interface, except for the Cntrl + Break of a boot. Cant seem to get this working with hyperterm.
Tried all these:

Anybody have a solution.
Thanks,

My new Dell Latitude D610 has a serial port.
In fact, we purchased Dells 'because' they have a 'real' 9 pin serial port.

I prefer it's compact design relative to some others i've used.
