Nexus 5672 orphan ports

We have a pair of Nexus 5672 switches in a vPC configuration, each with a FEX attached.

I cannot create a non member port on  the FEX switches,  I have to create a corresponding  unconnected  port on the second FEX switch before the actual  connected port will become active.  Not wanting to configure a "phantom" port, why would  I not able to configure orphan ports?

If each FEX is attached to both 5672 switches and if the 5672 switches are configured together as vPC, you need the same exact config on both parent switches.
