Nexus VTP Client to Server.

Hi All,

We have a setup like this

          3750 static -  COre switch
            /     \
           /       \
   5548 Nexus -      5548 Nexus    - Access switches

Now 3750 is core switch and it is VTP server now ,all L3 and L2 vlans are created on the switch.

Nexus 5548 are at access layer and both nexus configured as VTP , I see all vlans are replicated from Core switch (3750 stack swith).

Nowe we are planning to make 2 Nexus as VTP server alongwith 3750 switch. I doubt is that,if Nexus will be configured as VTP server here, is any impact to my existing netowrk since we have another exising VTP server on network ?

Hello,

From your description:

"Nowe we are planning to make 2 Nexus as VTP server alongwith 3750 switch"

Are you planning on the Nexus devices being in their own separate VTP domains? How are you planning on setting up your VTP domains?

Thanks

Joey

Hi

Before changing configuration to vtp server you need to check whether ALL vtp settings are equal on 3750 and n5k - because there is a main caveat of VTP - possibility to rewrite all vlan config.

If config is equal there should not be any issues in changing vtp role.

But in general vtp is not recomended for implementation because of many issues that may be caused by it.

HTH,

Alex

EUHUBLYONCS1#sh vtp status

VTP Version                     : 2

Configuration Revision          : 23

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005

Number of existing VLANs        : 24

VTP Operating Mode              : Server

VTP Domain Name                 : EUHUB

VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled

VTP V2 Mode                     : Disabled

VTP Traps Generation            : Disabled

--------------

Nexus5K# sh vtp status
VTP Status Information
----------------------
VTP Version                     : 2 (capable)
Configuration Revision          : 23
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005
Number of existing VLANs        : 24
VTP Operating Mode              : Client
VTP Domain Name                 : TEST
VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled (Operationally Disabled)
VTP V2 Mode                     : Disabled
VTP Traps Generation            : Disabled

So my requirement is ...

1. Change VTP client to server on both nexuses switches

2. I will keep 3750 stack switch as server (no change)

Can we can keep three VTP servers on the network . if any vlan is added on nay one of the switch ,that vlan should be replicated to all of them.

Thanks

Sri

Hi Sri

Yes you can have 3 servers in the network. But also be aware if some one else will delete or add vlan - this modifications will be applied on all switches.

Also I'd suggest you to move your n5k to transparend mode first - ot reset revision counter, then change domain name to the proper one and only then configure n5k as servers.

HTH,

Alex
