No spanning tree info available for interface

On a 2960-S POE switch with IOS version 15.0.2 there are 8 interfaces (ports 17 - 24) which report

                 no spanning tree info available for GigabitEthernetx/x/x

when issuing the command

                 show spanning-tree interface GigabitEthernetx/x/x

(I know I can get this output when the port is not configured at all, not part of any VLAN etc.) But those ports are all configured as access ports and to specific VLANs. All other ports work fine and do report their STP status with above command.

At the same time, when I connect anything, no LED lights up, interface is always reported as "down".

No errors shown in POST.

Tried to reset the ports to default, tried shutdown / no shutdown, switch reload. No change.

Does this mean these specific 8 ports are broken?

Yes, of course. The interfaces are eletronic parts with components and wires just like any eletronic device, It is perfect possible to face issue althouth it is very rare.

 You could eventually factory reset the switch and re-install the IOS but, chances are the problem will not be fixed if this related to hardware.

This is the 2960 from inside.

@pschulz

 We can assume this is a hardware/software problem for two reasons. First, as you well said, the other ports is fine and second, if one port is part of a vlan, it should be mapped on the spanning-tree.

So it is possible for some ports to fail, while the rest of the switch and all its functionality works perfectly okay?
