Hi,

is there any rule of thumb how many access points (AP) can be connected to one access switch?

Hi

No more then 48 APs (joking)

There´s no rule as far as I know but I can give you some advises based on the experience. If you connect to much AP in one switch and this switch crash, you can lost most of your wifi network as AP can not migrate to another switch by itself.

So, if you can, spread your AP around access switches.

Also, newer AP consume 25W of power. So, imagening 40 AP in one switch, this means  1.000 W.  For example, this switch:

C9300-48H

PWR-C1-1100WAC-P

822W

So, you need two power supply to handle 40 APs.

  • Depends on the model of the switch.
  • Depends on the PoE allowance.
  • Depends on the uplink.
  • Depends on the network.

the best practice is that you need to spread AP to multiple switches if one switch is down then the limited environment will impact not all. if you planning to connect all of those AP,s on a single switch if switch down for any reason the fully wireless environment will impact.

segment will be better.

you can buy 100W or something like that so you can connect some APs and some users.

 - As far as the local-switch is concerned , I would say none, since switch-capacity and uplinks usually outperform user traffic from access points.

For example, if you have 20 APs on one location, how would you spread them across switches?

How many switches do you have on this location?  Let´s you have 5 switch, you should put 4 AP per switch but if you have only one switch, only one switch, then you have not much to do..
