I may not understand how to change a password correctly.
When I log into the switch (both telnet and console cable) it gives me the following:
telnet x.x.x.x (or plug in via console)
password: fakepasswordhere
enable
password fakepassword#2here
I am able to change fakepassword#2here by changing the enable secret password. However, the fakepasswordhere remains the same old unsecure password it's been for a while. how do I change this?

Hello,
post the config of your switch. Do you have 'service password-encryption' configured by any chance ?
