Ping latency issue between SVI interface vlan

HI

I would like to check how I can troubleshoot the problem for this issue.

A Server connecting to Vlan 100 , pinging to VLan 1 of management IP switch , latency shown as attache which means on few ping , the number of latency will suddenly shoot up to more than 50ms.. Is this normal?

Hi

Yes its normal as thats not a valid test pinging an SVI as it always depends whats going on on the backplane of the switch as ping is not prioritised in copp so if theres any load or process going on the pings will fluctuate when trying to ping a local interface especially logical  , the best test is a ip sla end to end through the switch to check latency from pc to pc or 2 other endpoints or standard ping even end to end between the devices

As Mark notes, and for the reasons he also notes, yes that could be normal.

Ping latency wasn't really designed for highly accurate latency measurements, ping was designed just as a basic test that a host is "on-line", and oh, BTW, here's the RTT latency too.
