Question about updating the firmware on stacked switches.

I think I know the answer but I need to make sure. The place I work for is slowly deploying several switch stacks for a client and we have to update some of them that are already in a different location. The few I've updated were already stacked so it was no issue having both switches on the same firmware version. Tomorrow I have to update another stack but the issue is that one switch is already updated while the other is running the old version.

If I were to power on the updated primary switch first, wait a couple minutes, and then power on the "outdated" secondary switch will that secondary switch update itself from the primary? I ask because when I did the original updating I only used 1 flashdrive in the primary and that worked perfectly fine just now it's a bit different. If it doesn't automatically update itself is there some kind of command I can run from the primary to force the update or would I have to go to the secondary and update it from there? The switches are 9400 series I believe.

9400 works different SVL

May be you talking about Cat 9300

if you have configured : On the Master stack - new member will be automatically upgraded.

software auto-upgrade enable

If they are already stack want to upgrade below steps will be upgrade whole stack : (check the syntax before you using it)

Note - make sure always backup the config out of the box.

#request platform software package clean switch all
#dir usbflash0:
#copy usbflash0:cat9k_xxxxx.bin flash:
#request platform software package install switch all file flash:cat9k_xxxxx.bin auto-copy
#reload
