questions about upgrading Cisco 5548UP

Hello, we want to upgrade our older Nexus 5548UP  6.0(2)N2(4). I understood that i will need to use the upgrade path way to upgrade it to lastest suggested version. That would be:  7.0(8)N1(1) --> 7.1(4)N1(1) --> 7.3(8)N1(1).

But i have other questions.

1) Why it's recommended to start on VPC primary switch ?

2) And why it's recommended to a pre-provisioning of the connected FEX'es ? What would be if skip this step ? Thanks.

Hi,

1) Why it's recommended to start on VPC primary switch ?

If you upgrade the primary first and reboot it, the backup becomes primary. So, now you upgrade the old backup (new primary) and reboot and the old primary becomes the primary again and the switches are back where you started when it comes to which is primary and which is backup.

2) And why it's recommended to a pre-provisioning of the connected FEX'es ? What would be if skip this step ?

It is probably because it shorted the maintenance window and you are back in business sooner.
