i am accessing a router via telnet . i need to know weather it is a real router or a virtual router running on a virtual machine. how do i know it ? is there any command ?

Especially when you are using telnet to access the device I do not know of any way to determine what kind of device you are connecting to.

Does Cisco Discovery Protocol help on this matter? I believe it will give you an idea if the other end is a router or not.

Hi
Have you tried executing show version, it will provide platform info like model and IOS. So you can identify if it is a standalone, module or virtual device. Also the virtual device could have different file extension type.
