Removing and Adding Switches to a Switch Stack with No Reboot

Hello All.  This is a two part question.

First, I'd like to remove member switch 3 and 4 of a switch stack in full bandwidth connection by stackwise cabling without causing a reboot of the stack.  Currently the config shows

switch 1 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 2 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 3 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 4 provision ws-c3750x-48p

If I were to simply just power off switch 3 and 4 then connect the stackwise cables correctly for full bandwidth with switch 1 and 2 would this cause a reboot?

Secondly, I'd like to take these two switches and add to an existing 2 member switch stack in full bandwidth connection by stackwise cabling.  That stack has

switch 1 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 2 provision ws-c3750x-48p

What would I have to do to the recently removed switches to have them join the new stack without the new stack rebooting?

Note all switches are clients part of the same vtp domain and all are running the same IOS.  Thanks.

Hello

remove a switch from a stack

1) power it down and them unprovision it

2) recable  the existing switches stackwise cables

3) perform

no switch  xx provision xx

add switch to existing stack

1) on existing stack - switch xxx provision (type of switch your adding)

2) on new switch change switch priority to a value higher then the existing master then  save and power off

3) connect stackwise cables

4) power on switch

As long as switch has same iOS and feature set you should be good to go!

Thanks for the post.  I noticed once I removed a particular member I could remove other provisions from its configuration, but not itself.  For example I removed member switch 3

switch 1 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 2 provision ws-c3750x-48p
switch 3 provision ws-c3750x-48p

I'd be able to remove switch 1 prov... and switch 2 prov..., but would get an error about not being able to remove switch 3 prov... because it is physically present.

A switch 3 renumber 1 , wr erase, reload made the removed switch only have

switch 1 provision ws-c3750x-48p

I ensured the priority was 1 and installed to the new switch stack as you stated and all went well.

Having a similar issue where I have Switch 2 as the active.  I want to remove Switch 2 and make 1 the active member but attempts to renumber I get a message as if the syntax priority is no recognized? (See below)

Switch/Stack Mac Address : 70df.2f07.3380 - Local Mac Address
Mac persistency wait time: Indefinite
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
------------------------------------------------------------
1 Member 0000.0000.0000 0 Provisioned
*2 Active 70df.2f07.3380 10 V02 Ready

------------------------------------------------------------

renumber is not recognized:

DC-MDF-SW3(config)#switch 2 renumber 1
                                                  ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

An attempt to change switch 1 priority as a higher one I get a similar issue that the syntax priority is not recognized.

------------------------------------------------------------

DC-MDF-SW3(config)#switch 1 priority 1
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

DC-MDF-SW3(config)#switch 1 ?
provision Configure Switch provision / offline config

DC-MDF-SW3(config)#switch 1

Am I missing something before this to allow these commands to work?  Thank you!

Hi Paul

Please try from User Mode to make change the switch priority and renumber  it

DC-MDF-SW3#switch 2 renumber 1

DC-MDF-SW3#switch 2 priorty 1

Try the above mentioned command hope it will work

but its also depend on switch models

if its 3850 it work from User mode to change the switch renumber and priorty

if you are using the 2960 or 3750 or 60 then apply from  config mode

Try hope so it will work

thanks
