Replace C3750-24p Master switch with C3750-48P switch

I need to replace a WS-C3750-24P switch (currently the master switch) in a stack of 4 switches with a 48 port model (WS-C3750-48P). I plan to shut down the master switch 1, remove the StackWise cables, cable up the replacement 48P 3750, and power it on. The new 48P switch needs to become the master.

Will this apply a default configuration to the 48P switch as the models are different, and if so, should I modify the provisioned switch in the running config to "switch 2 provision ws-c3750-48p" after removing switch 1 and before powering up the 48P? If not, is there a recommended procedure to follow?

The current layout is as follows:

Switch Ports Model              SW Version            SW Image

------ ----- -----              ----------            ----------

*    1 26    WS-C3750-24P       12.2(55)SE8           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     2 52    WS-C3750-48P       12.2(55)SE8           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     3 52    WS-C3750-48P       12.2(55)SE8           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     4 52    WS-C3750-48P       12.2(55)SE8           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

Switch#  Role   Mac Address     Priority Version  State

----------------------------------------------------------

*1       Master 0013.c351.7400     3      0       Ready

 2       Member 001f.9d96.d580     2      0       Ready

 3       Member 0013.c332.2680     1      0       Ready

 4       Member 0013.c332.3c00     1      0       Ready

The running-config is set as:

switch 1 provision ws-c3750-24p

switch 2 provision ws-c3750-48p

switch 3 provision ws-c3750-48p

switch 4 provision ws-c3750-48p

Thanks,

John

What Leo describes is great, but wanted to note, your replacement switch will not be the active stack master.

3750 stack elections only happen when they need to, i.e. there is need to elect a new stack master.

There are several ways to get your replacement switch to become the new stack master.  One would be to power cycle the active stack master (should be stack member 2) after the replacement switch is fully on-line (and provisioned with the highest priority, as noted by Leo).
