Replace faulty WS-C3850-48XS-S under stack configuration

We have 2*WS-C3850-48XS-X switches which are configured as stack using stackwise-viatual link. Switch:1 is faulty so we plan to replace it. Stackwise-virtual link is formed by 1/0/47, 1/0/48, 2/0/47 and 2/0/48.

configuration:

switch 1 provision ws-c3850-48xs

switch 2 provision ws-c3850-48xs

stackwise-virtual

domain 1


interface TenGigabitEthernet1/0/47

stackwise-virtual link 1

interface TenGigabitEthernet1/0/48

stackwise-virtual link 1

interface TenGigabitEthernet2/0/47

stackwise-virtual link 1

interface TenGigabitEthernet2/0/48

stackwise-virtual link 1

In case of above configuration, will the configuration be synchronized automatically if we config only stackwise-virtual link port on new switch and connect them then power on? Or do we have to restore full configuration to new switch before replace?

Is there any recommended procedure?

since this is still just a stack, ensure the iOS level is the same, configure the provisioning and virtual domain and stackwise links, then you should be good. 


be careful and don't add it to the stack while its already up and running, this will cause a stack merge and reload your active switch


"A StackWise Virtual system operates with SSO redundancy if it meets the following requirements: • Both the switches must be running the same software version, unless they are in the process of software upgrade.  With SSO redundancy, the StackWise Virtual standby switch is always ready to assume control if a fault occurs on the StackWise Virtual active switch. Configuration, forwarding, and state information are synchronized from the Stackwise Virtual active switch to the redundant switch at startup, and whenever changes to the StackWise Virtual active switch configuration occur."

Hi Vince

Thank you for your kindly reply.

Unfortunately, our engineer have already replaced faulty switch before reading your reply and network issue occurred because they added a new switch to the stack while it was already up. It seemed that stack link could not establish, then both switch were running separately. The issue was solved by rebooting the switch.

We will follow below procedure at next time if we have to replace a switch with Stackwise Virtual.

1. install same IOS and license to new switch

2. set switch number and priority same as original one

3. restore full configuration to new switch

4. remove faulty switch

5. replace switch

6. connect cables for Stackwise Virtual Link

7. connect power cable

8. verify stack status then connect other cables
