^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Switch#copy usbflash1:cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin run

The syntax is incorrect.

For a switch that is stacked, the correct syntax is:

copy usbflash-1:filename.bin flash-1:filename.bin

 For a standalone switch:

copy usbflash:filename.bin flash:filename.bin

do I still utilize the same syntax if I am copying from a usb?

Switch#$sh:cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin flash:cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin

As you mentioned you booted with USB that is correct right ? if yes then try

dir usbflash0:  (if the files display) then copy from  USB. make sure it list the file  cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin

#copy usbflash0:cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin flash:cat9k_iosxe.17.03.01.SPA.bin

Yes, use the same syntax for either standalone or a switch member.

I am dealing with an standalone and the syntax didn't work.

For standalone, the syntax is:

copy usbflash:filename.bin flash:filename.bin

Check the logs to make sure the USB thumb drive is "compatible" with the switch.
