Hi there,

The stack master operates the management plane for the entire stack. A master switch is selected either by manually configured priority or via automated election during stack bootup.

On newer IOS-XE switches, both management and control planes are managed by the stack master.

In the event of the master switch failing, the remaining stack members run through the election process again to elect a new stack master.

cheers,

Seb.

The stack master member is the "brains" for the stack (much like a Cisco switch chassis supervisor card). Stack members generally just perform data forwarding (much like a Cisco switch chassis line card), as controlled by the stack master.

If the current stack master physically fails, another stack member takes over (much like a Cisco switch chassis with dual supervisor cards and the active one fails).
