Stack switch - role sequence

Hello All,

This is a 3750 stack switch. It appears switch 3 is master now( unsure why, but possibly due to reboot of switch1 which is configured

with higher priority of 10).

As part of a power maintenance activity, this stack will be powered-off and then re-powered up after couple of hours.

                                           H/W   Current
Switch#  Role   Mac Address     Priority Version  State
----------------------------------------------------------
 1       Member e8a7.48de.9400     10     1       Ready
 2       Member e8a7.48c5.4980     1      1       Ready
*3       Master 44c3.ba50.4000     1      1       Ready

Doubts that i have:-

- If we power up switch 3 first in order, will it still retain the current master status?
- if by chance switch 1 or 2 is powered-up first, what will happen to the roles and
will it impact the switch or end host configurations?
( just worried if another one becomes master, that will take up the Gi1/0/X nomenclature for its interfaces )

We want to maintain the same switch roles/status and ensure the configurations or so do not get altered in the activity.

Appreciate all help on this. thanks in advance.

When  you power up just switch 3 it will particiapte in a stack election on its own, which it will win. When you power on switch1 it will join the stack as a slave.

Only if switch3 was powered off would another election take place and switch1's priority would ensure it becomes master.

cheers,

Seb.

Hi there,

If you power up all switches at once, they will all arrive at the strack master election stage at the same time, at the conclusion of this process switch1 will be elected as master.

If switch 1 or 2 powered up first, then switch1 would still be elected master due to its higher priority. Since all switches will have the same startup-config (and 'switch provision' statements) there will be no impact to switch or end host configurations.

cheers,

Seb.

This is correct, I would suggest assigning priority values on each switch in the stack to assure if/when they lose power they will remain in the same order when they hit the election. All switches maintain the same configuration file.

Thanks Seb & Jhager.

what happens if we power-up switch-3(current master) first and then follow it with the rest two...

will switch-3 retain its current master status or will switch-1 be up as master as per its high priority?
