Folks,
I am looking to see is anyone can recommend me a Core switch to be used in a Campus Infrastructure.
The requirements are to connect about 4 edge switch and will need 12 x 10 Gig connection. We also want to connect 16 x 1 gig connections for other network devices link router, wireless etc.
Along with this there would be a maximum of 30 servers connected over 1 Gig links. We need all the enterprise level services.
We were looking at a Cisco 6807 switch but then this will just remain underutilized for the site.
We have Cisco 6509E switch but then they are running older Supervisor modules.
What would be the best model to go for?
Thanks!!
Regards,
Nikhil Kulkarni.

6807. No question asked.
With a Sup2T in a 6807, the backplane speed is 220 Gbps. You are correct, this is underutilized but is the network going to grow or not?
Sticking a Sup2T into a 6500 is a waste of money.

What "old" sup model in your existing 6509E? Any sup720 provides 40 Gbps per slot, and you can get 4 or 8 10g port line cards. So with a sup720 you can easily support 12 10g ports and 16 gig ports. However, if you need to upgrade from a sup1 or sup2 or you need to obtain multiple CEF720 line cards, you might want to pursue a newer device.
If you believe a 6807 is too much (although it's the principal follow on for the 6509), you could consider the 6880 or perhaps even the recent 6840 series.

What are the tentative cost differences between a Cisco 6880 and the Cisco 6807 switches? I only want a tentative difference to get some projections done.

Generally, the 6880 would cost less, but so much depends on what you populate each with and any special discounts/deals you might obtain. Anything I provided would likely be inaccurate.
