- Line card
- Module
These 2 terms are interchangeable. However, the line card term is often used when referring to switching modules while the module is used when referring to anything that can be install on the available slots.
- Supervisor engine/module
- backplane
Supervisor Engine is the brain of the switch. All traffic in and out of the switch is monitored by this module.
The backplane is the interconnection between the modules. Without the backplane, all modules would sit on an island.
