what does the function of the supervisor module on switch do?

The supervisor in a chassis switch is the "brains" to the switch. It makes most of the switching/routing decisions and runs the IOS software.

To slightly expand upon Mark's post, the supervisor is the "boss" brains. Depending on the hardware involved, other functions can be performed on other chassis cards. The supervisor supervises all functions, but it may not actually perform all functions all the time.
