i think switch should be within 3 layers, i.e. core, distribution, access layer. if it is more than 3 layers. it should has problem, but i forgot what's wrong. Does anyone can talk me what it is?

Thanks!

Samuel

The purpose of the hierarchical model is to accommodate performance requirements, and to set clear functional boundaries for services in you LAN. Cisco's model is the 3 tier model, therefore it is the most widely used. This is not a hard rule, but it certainly is time tested. The only hard and fast rule is that STP diameter should not exceed 7 switches, and you can even circumvent that (highly ill advised).

hi jdevoll,

right, it is stp diameter problem.

how to check whether some wrong if diameter exeeed 7?

Thanks!

Samuel

on this also, i would run the spanning tree root at the distribution layer and use layer 3 between that and the core.

cheers
